Artist Profile
KOHEI NAKATA
Born 1981, Wakayama, Japan
Lives and Works in Wakayama and Kyoto / Japan
The paintings and works on paper of Kohei Nakata are an example of patient and dedicated process.
With the works on plywood panel the paint is carefully pulled across the board with a squeegee and then the process repeated until the required result. With the works on paper in coloured pencil the mark is carefully erased leaving a barely visible image. The paintings from 2011 are a combination of the two processes on board and paper where by repetitive process a rectangle is drawn then erased and painted over with semi transparent acrylic paint and then the process repeated .
Although approached from a non religious viewpoint, for a Japanese artist the process is an inherent understanding of Zen and its influence on the culture. To those outside of this culture the immediate association would be with Minimalism. These works by Kohei Nakata go beyond that visual experience. The immediate aesthetic, like the paintings and works on paper themselves, is on the surface but the viewer becomes aware of more activity underneath.
